Now the agencies contacted us! What’s next?

Hello Everyone!

This is Mari, a mom and manager for 2 working kids as child models and actors in NYC area.

I hope you found my previous post “What to get ready to apply for the agent and manager” useful.

So how has your progress been?

Some of you might have already applied to some agencies or some of you might have already got the callbacks!

Or some of you are worrying that they haven’t heard any news yet although you’ve applied some agencies and managers…

For those of you who have not heard any news yet, please DO NOT get discouraged!

The key to the success in this industry is to not to give up and keep trying!!

Maybe the next time, you could take a different type of picture or apply other agencies that you haven’t applied before. Please don’t give up and try again and again!

And HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the lucky ones who got replies from the agencies!

That is a HUGE step forward!

The next step will be to meet the agents and managers in person and get your child auditioned by them.

What to do and what to prepare for the casting at model agencies and talent agencies are different, so I list up the common process and the things to get ready in below:

Casting for Modeling Agencies

1. Make appointment

Usually, the casting for modeling agencies takes around 15-30mins at their office. When you make an appointment, I’d choose a day when you don’t have other plans or have enough time in case you have to wait. Once you made your appointment, please double check the time/ date and location and try to get their 5-10 mins early.

2. Preparation for the casting – I’d recommend getting below things ready.

・ Please print out your child’s photo in 5’ x 7’ or 8’ x 10’ size and write down your child name, age, size information and your contact information on the back. I’d take it to the casting for just in case they ask.

・ I’d choose simple cloth for your child, no busy patterns or huge logo, and choose a nice color which will complement your child skin, eye, and hair color.

・ I’d strongly suggest to go with no hats, no sunglasses and no makeup.

3. Things to take with you for your appointment

Besides the photos prints that I describe above, I’d take snacks, drinks, extra clothes, and diapers and things to entertain your child, such as games, books etc… in case you’ll have to wait.

4. What to do at the casting

Usually, the agents will meet you and your child and take some photos of your child. It should be pretty quick around 10-15 mins.

5. When and How to get the result

Some agencies might tell you at your appointment or they will call you later.

The casting for the talent agencies

1.  Make an appointment

Often the casting for the talent agencies takes longer than the one for the modeling agencies, so please plan to spend 30 mins or so. (It’ll be most likely shorter) Once your appointment is made, please double check the time/ date and location and try to get their 5-10 mins early.

2. Preparation for the casting

・ Please print out your child photo in 8’ x 10’ size and staples your child resume in 4 corners on the back. You will include your child name, age, size information, contact information and previous related experience in the resume. Please refer my previous post for more details.

・ I’d choose simple cloth for your child without busy patterns or huge logo.

・ If your child already has acting/ singing experience, you can mention to them when you make an appointment and see they would like to see it.

3. Things to take with you for your appointment

Same as the casting for the modeling agencies, I’d take snacks, drinks, extra clothes and things to entertain your child in case you’ll have to wait.

If your child will be showing his/ her talent, please make sure to prep anything related to that. (ex: MP3 files of piano track for the song that your child will sing, music sheet of the song, copy of monologue scrip etc…)

4. What to do at the casting

It’s usual that your child will go into the office by him/ herself (the parents will wait outside), then they will ask to read the short script, sing short songs, or answer some questions regarding their previous related experience.

5. The result

Usually, they will call you in a few days.

The other important thing is that this could be the only opportunity for parents to meet the agents and manager in person before you make your decision, so I’d use this opportunity to really get to know them and check how you feel about them even though it could be a very short time.

Once the casting is done, all you can do is to wait for the result.

Please make sure to praise your child’s braveness and celebrate their hard work!

In my next post, I’d like to talk about what you need to check before choosing your agents and signing the contract with them.

See you next time!
